Tips concerning the paints

The Painting-by-Number hobby shall give you a lot of fun and pleasure. To paint without problems, the correct handling of the paints is most important. Therefore, please carefully read the following 9 rules and observe the painting instructions.

ATTENTION: Once the containers have been opened,
the paint will only last for a limited time!(about 12 weeks).

Rule No. 1:

Open the paint containers only immediately before starting to paint. It is very difficult to pack the fast-drying paints in very small quantities (approx. 3 ml per container) in such a way that they can be stored in the shop for quite some time. The paint containers of the latest generation of the company SCHIPPER Arts & Crafts fulfill this requirement. However, once they have been opened, the paint might dry out. Therefore, the amateur painter should accomplish the picture as soon as possible after having opened the paint containers.

Rule No. 2: Opening the containers

To avoid that the paints dry out, the containers are particularly well closed. Opening them for the first time is a little hard.

To open them, proceed in two steps.

Step 1 :

Put the row of containers on the table. Press the two flaps together with your thumb and forefinger until the lid lifts a little.

Step 2 :

Hold the container with one hand and, with the other hand, seize the brim of the lid and open it against the resistance. Do not pull the flaps forcibly, they might break off. Always open only the paints actually needed.

Rule No. 3:

Put any paint adhering on the lid back into the container using the brush.

It is not known in which position the boxes will be stored in the shop. Therefore, some paint may adhere on the lid when you open the container. With the brush, put this paint carefully back into the container. Observe the painting instructions.

Rule No. 4:

Thickened paint can be made usable again by means of a few drops of water.

Although the containers are very tight, the paints may thicken during storage, due to fluctuations of temperature. Add a few drops of water to make them usable again. Observe the painting instructions.

Rule No. 5:

Once the paint containers have been opened, the picture should be completed without long interruptions.

After the containers have been opened for the first time, there is the risk that the paints might dry out. After opening of the container, the paint will remain usable for at least 12 weeks, provided that the following instructions are strictly observed.

Rule No. 6:

When taking a break, firmly close the containers, after having removed any liquid or dry paint remainders from the brim and the sealing lip in the lid. Drawings A and B show the principle:

In drawing A, the container is airtight because the sealing lip in the lid accommodates the brim without obstruction.
In drawing B, paint remainders prevent a tight closing. Air penetrating from outside will dry out the paint. Therefore, carefully clean each container before you close it. Remove paint remainders on the brim with your fingernail, in the round sealing lip, with a toothpick or a big needle.

Make sure that brim and sealing lip are clean before closing the lid with your two thumbs until it audibly catches.

Rule No. 7:

When taking a break of several weeks, carefully clean the paint containers, wrap them in a moist cloth and pack them in a plastic bag or an airtight plastic box. This measure additionally protects the paints against drying out. In general, it cannot be expected that paints which have been opened, remain usable for many months or even years.

Rule No. 8: Viscosity of the paints

After each break, the viscosity of the paints has to be readjusted for good usability. The paints contain water, which will quickly evaporate when the containers are open. They will thicken and have to be diluted by adding a few drops of water every now and then. Afterwards, stir them thoroughly.

Rule No. 9: The correct numbering of the paint containers

When painting by number, it is most important that the numbers on the containers correspond to the numbers on the pattern. Some motives make it necessary to include several containers with the same colour. As these paints have the same number, the sequence of numbering changes. Please see the instructions for correct numbering of the paint containers on the enclosed control sheet.
